We have all seen those photos of newborns with their parents: tiny bundles swaddled in a warm blanket, wrapped in two pairs of loving arms, with parents grinning from ear to ear. It’s the picture-perfect family.

But what about those families whose story is much different?

Replace the blanket with an incubator designed to provide optimal heat and humidity to those living inside it. Replace the loving arms with leads that connect to a monitor that incessantly emits alarms and a feeding tube trailing through the immature digestive tract. There’s also an IV line connected to the freshly disconnected umbilical cord and abundant wires and tubes connected to a host of machines performing varying levels of life-sustaining work.
